Learning from Disruption: CSO Transformation

On MAY 15 & 16 MSPs GATHERED FOR A CONFERENCE CALLED UNIVERSE.  THIS ARTICLE IS BASED ON THE PRESENTATIONS AT THAT EVENT.

History is filled with examples of technological disruption.

When introduced, they were earth shattering.  Today?  Well, no one thinks twice about a cell phone, solar energy sources, or electric vehicles.  And there’s companies like Airbnb and Uber that completely transformed their respective industries (hospitality and transportation) by leveraging innovative tech solutions.  Airbnb disrupted the traditional hotel model by allowing individuals to rent out their homes. Similarly, Uber upended the taxi industry by connecting riders and drivers through a convenient smartphone app.

But think back to when each of these examples started.  There were questions, concerns, and even a few protests.  One of the latest disruptive technologies to hit the world is AI. This is a major disruption that will hit every corner of humanity, and CSOs can be on the leading edge of it.

The Dystopian Future of MSPs: A World Run by AI?

Before we get to the good news, let’s start with what most people think of when they hear AI: Hollywood blockbusters showing a dystopian world run by AI.  Although this is an extreme view, for many in the tech world, AI presents a real-life nightmare.  Imagine a future where AI, powered by tools like Microsoft's Intune, takes over the tasks traditionally handled by humans in cybersecurity. In this dystopian scenario, AI could replace YOU.

But that doesn’t have to be the case

CSOs As Transformative Leaders With AI

Cybersecurity is a vital part of an organization’s future success.  That places CSOs squarely in the driver’s seat as strategic leaders.  You see, AI lacks human oversight which is a crucial element in an organization’s cybersecurity strategy, and that’s where a CSO can be a transformative leader:

  • Contextual Understanding: CSOs see the broader context of a problem, including non-quantifiable elements like cultural nuances or ethical considerations.

  • Ethical Judgments: Decisions about data privacy, user consent, and ethical implications of AI actions still require CSO guidance.

  • Innovative Problem Solving: AI is excellent at optimizing within set parameters, but CSOs excel at thinking outside the box and finding novel solutions to complex problems.

Think about the evolution of IT support itself. What started as fixing hardware and software issues has transformed into strategic planning, cybersecurity expertise, and driving digital transformation for clients.  AI can be a valuable part of a CSO’s integral role in an organization’s overall success strategy.

The Cost of Inaction: Don't Become Obsolete

The time is now for CSOs to embrace a transformative role with this disruptive technology Waiting too long to adapt to AI can render CSOs irrelevant. Remember the fate of once-dominant companies like Blockbuster and Borders Books, both victims of clinging to outdated models in the face of technological change. Borders failed to adapt to the rise of e-commerce and digital content, leading to its demise, while Amazon thrived by embracing the trend.

The future of the technology industry is uncertain, but one thing is clear: AI is here to stay and CSOs are the perfect strategic leaders to work with it. By embracing change, acquiring new skillsets, and transforming into strategic partners, CSOs can ensure their organizations not only survive but thrive in the coming era of AI-powered innovation.
